Boating agencies and safety organisations
Boat Safety Scheme – The Boat Safety Scheme (BSS) was jointly established in 1997 by the Environment Agency and British Waterways to promote safety on the inland waterways. Boats must meet the Scheme's requirements in order for a navigation licence to be issued. The Second Edition of the Scheme for privately owned or managed craft was introduced in August 2005. A separate guide covers hire craft, small passenger boats, workboats and similar non-private craft. The guides can be ordered, viewed or downloaded from the BSS website.
